I remember when I was young(er) one of my friend told me about a needle story.
He said when I have a needle hold between my fingers and I stay far beyond your eyesight field and ask you the following question:
-What do I have in my hand?
You will answer:
-Nothing
And when I walk near you and repeat the same question, your answer will be:
-A needle
That is a story that shows distance can distort our ability to ignore a fact.
It can also be just opposite. As much as it can makes us ignoring what really exist it can also let us have an exaggerated view.
Now we can pass to our main subject.
When I read the news about what is written in media about China in Europe and America.
I remember the needle story that from distance we can see what there is not and ignore what there is.
Basically there is a continent size country with huge distance separating one city from the outskirts, one city from another city and naturally one province from another.
There is a big number of languages and cultures and a multitude of products are produced almost everywhere with some exceptions.
The cost of transportation is still very high for domestic trade. And everywhere most of the products are consumed with the nearby end users.
And everything is many. Many workers , many factories who produce the same product and the competition is very strong.
Added to all these factors the geographical fragmentation of the market make it difficult to locate and identify the best source for any given product and service without having a permanent prospecting tool in the market.
The income level are different in different parts so they are the cost levels and price levels.
I will end up with what an Indian merchant from London answered me, when I told
him my knowledge in his business field is very low.
He answered me:
-Do you think anybody knows what is business? Nobody! Everybody just try his best
